As a YA author I was really jealous when I read the first two lines of the book: "The night Heaven lost her heart was cold and moonless. But the blade that sliced it out was warm with her dark blood." It blew me away, giving me one of those moments where I got opening line envy. Unfortunately the rest of the book didn't quite live up to the promise of those first two lines. It's is still an excellent read, and one I would recommend. I just think for me, after the wow factor of those lines, it didn't quite live up to my expectations.
I loved the concept of this book - Luce having to travel back through time, via the Announcers, to re-visit her past lives in order to work out why she is cursed to die every time she falls in love with Daniel and how she can stop it, and all the while Daniel is chasing after her, desperate that she doesn't do something that will kill her or alter the future. The passion still doesn't hit the dizzying heights that I would like it to, but it certainly had me hooked from start to finish. There is a slight jar in the story-line (Daniel suddenly changes the way he looks and it threw me a little - don't know whether that is my fault for missing something in the writing or whether it's a fault of the story) so that is why this has four stars instead of five, but, it didn't take away from my enjoyment too much!
This was a good read, maybe not as good as the first book but developing some interesting plot twists for Book 3, Passion. At times it was a little repetitive - too many of the same scene where Daniel takes Luce in his arms and they kiss in the air among the stars - where I would have preferred their relationship to have been explored a little deeper. I know (spoiler) that Daniel and Luce spend most of this book apart but, on the occasions they are together I would think it would be more passionate - and I mean passion, not sex - that would not work in this book. But, I still enjoyed it and I liked Luce's confusion over her feelings for Daniel and the "safer" alternative, Miles. The ending really does add an interesting twist though, which made me jump straight to Book 3. Although this book is a little clichéd in places I still really liked it. The romance is ramped up more than in, say City of Bones, but didn't quite take me to the heights of Twilight. For me, the writing was strong enough to keep me turning those pages wanting to see Luce and Daniel get together and now that they are, but still aren't (if that makes any sense!)it has made me want to read the next book in the Fallen series. There are a few problems though; some of it was predictable, for e.g. Daniel's last name is Grigori, so for anyone who knows anything about the history of angels it was a no-brainer working out he was an angel. It was also obvious that Cam wasn't the guy for Luce with all the serpent symbolism that accompanied him so I never really believed that she would go off with him. However, the fact that Daniel and Cam are now working together at the end of the book has given me an appetite to read on. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6487308-fallen |
